Chapter 34

It took him longer than expected to reach his destination. All along the route from the Admiral’s restaurant he’d speculated about the meeting between Varinayshvey Nisaiphun, or the Lady of Death as she was known in Bangkok, and Kate St George. Deep in thought, he’d almost slowed to a crawl when he remembered his weekly meeting. Picking up his pace, he began to jog to make up time. Now, not only late but also out of breath, he stopped in front of an imposing white gate.

He knocked. A servant opened the gate just enough to allow him to squeeze through. ‘The Master is waiting upstairs for you. You’d better hurry, he looks angry!’

He raced across the yard and rushed up the stairs, taking two at a time.

‘You’re late. Five more minutes and I would have moved to my next safe house.’ The man spoke Jawi, a language they were both more comfortable with than Thai.

‘Sorry.’ He hated having to grovel to the older man, who was busy loosening the tiny screws on his reading glasses. ‘I’m late because I was surveilling Kate St George and the Lady of Death having lunch together,’ he said, savouring the fact that he got the Master’s attention.

‘What were they discussing?’

‘St George chose a table in the corner with a high wall behind her. I couldn’t hear their conversation, but I think they were discussing Pongrit’s death.’

‘But why have lunch together? St George could have just as easily gone to the Institute and questioned Varinayshvey there,’ the older man said.

‘I heard that they are friends. They met in Britain when the Lady of Death trained to be a forensic pathologist.’

The man glared at him from across the table. It had been a mistake to speak out of order. He should have kept his mouth shut.

‘There is not much that Varinayshvey could tell St George except that Pongrit was from Pattani,’ the Master declared and waved his hand to dismiss any further discussion on the subject. ‘But I think we should deal with a potential problem while we have the opportunity. Kate and Nina St George are having dinner at Fuzion Thai tonight. They always leave through the front entrance. I’ll see to it that you’ll have plenty of time before Nop collects them. All you have to do is make sure that your aim is true.’ The Master finished fiddling with the screws and put on his reading glasses. ‘We’ll meet in two days’ time. I’ll inform you when and where.’

Aware of how, on some days, the slightest pressure on the Master’s ear could be painful and affect his mood, he was relieved the meeting was over. Now all he had to do was prepare for the long evening ahead.

It was mid-afternoon when Kate entered the kitchen at Global Cuisine. Although the vertical blinds of Gunter’s office window were partially closed, she could see him scowling at the paperwork spread across his desk. She knocked and entered the small office.

‘I see you’re a happy bunny this afternoon.
